What is MS?
Multiple Sclerosis is commonly known as MS. It is a neurological disease that affects the CNS-Central Nervous System. It includes the Brain, Spinal Cord and Optic nerves. It is unpredictable and different for everyone, but affects women more than men.
In this disease, the term “Multiple” refers to many. The term “Sclerosis” refers to scars. These plaques or lesions on the brain may cause a variety of symptoms and a breakdown of the Myelin Sheath.
A flare up or new symptom, either minor or major, is known as an Exacerbation. This may or may not be recurring and once it happens, it usually cannot be reversed. Most medications are designed to treat the symptoms. However; there is NO known cause and NO known cure, yet.
Your medical specialist will be known as a Neurologist. Your family members, friends or an associates who assist you, are known as Care Givers. Professionally, you may seek Physical, Speech, and or Occupational Therapists, just to name a few.
MS affects about 2.1 million people worldwide, most are in the Northern latitude. Discussions regarding heredity, gender, age, geography, and possible ethnicity vary. Some diseases in the same autoimmune family include Lupus, Fibromyalgia, Graves Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Hashimoto, just to name a few.
However; diet, appropriate exercise, positive thinking, medication, meditation, spirituality, self advocacy, and stress reduction, are all helpful tools in maintaining and or improving your overall health.
